We were invited to attend the new SPRING afternoon tea menu at Windsor Arms in Toronto Ontario Canada, so of course we said yes! Two tea girlies like us would never turn down such an invite!
The Windsor Arms hotel has 3 different rooms where they serve their afternoon tea seven days a week; they take it pretty seriously.
On this occasion, we were seated in the green room which was a first for us and b/c we were early we got to choose this lovely corner seat by the window. We started by each choosing a tea; there are many tea options here so certainly something for everyone! The tea was loose leaf with proper tea leaf strainers. I chose EARLS GOLD tea as I was curious about a sweet and smokey combination, as described. This tea was ok for me, I missed a strong bergamot flavour that earl grey usually has, which is my usual tea choice, as you know.. My tea friend chose ”earl grey with roses” and she liked her tea more than I liked mine.
Our food arrived next on the 3 tier plate, as expected. There were 6 savoury items for each of us. They were diverse in colours, shapes, and fillings. We both agreed that our favourite savory bite was the goat cheese quiche. My least favourite savoury was the cucumber cream cheese b/c I found it soggy - the layers were just too much for me. I didn’t eat the smoked salmon b/c I don’t like salmon but my friend enjoyed hers. The turkey, beef, and egg salad sammies were all good and the bread was all fresh. Overall, savouries were ample and tasted good.
Following savouries, we like to eat our scones and here each guest received two scones…yippee!!! . A plain scone and a raisin scone. It was served with a shared bowl of strawberry rhubarb preserve, mango spread, and real clotted cream. The preserves provided were not my personal favourite in terms of flavour or consistency. This was certainly not enough clotted cream for 4 scones, or 8 scone halves. You could probably ask for more, although we didn’t because we only ate one scone each and I asked for butter which arrived in a spreadable form (eg. not too cold) so that was awesome! The scones themselves were very tasty; a cakey texture which I quite enjoyed.
There were 4 sweets provided for each guest. I really appreciated the variety in terms of colours, shapes, and flavours, and even textures here with that peach-looking cookie. Sometimes desserts this pretty don’t always taste as good as they look but all 4 of these sweets tasted good to me. My favourite one was the chocolate opera cake b/c you know I love some chocolate at afternoon tea or any time of day. However, it was my friend’s least favourite b/c of the coffee undertone to it - but that goes to show, there’s something here for everyone even if every bite isn’t your fav; and I appreciated the diversity in sweet bites of this spring menu.
I’ve had afternoon tea at this venue several times and I always enjoy it; they take it seriously with all the expected items being done properly, in my opinion. This afternoon tea costs $65 on Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs. Then goes up to $85 per person on Fri, Sat, Sun. I don’t love this type of “surge pricing” model and I’ve rarely (if ever) encountered it elsewhere in my North American tea travels.
Monday to Thursday: $65 per person
Friday to Sunday: $85 per person
We’ve always been lucky to find street parking on the next block over, which can be a rare find in the city of Toronto. The hotel itself is pretty too. The washrooms are on the second floor which gives you a chance to walk around and enjoy the dark wood and classic hotel feeling here.
